Dan PrinceDan Prince is a photographer who manages to create enough information in one image to make the viewer almost feel they have just watched a short film; indeed there is a definite cinematographic tension in the composition of many of his pictures, and although there is that sense of past and future moments one gets from a film still, the content is so stylishly and subtly replete. These are well-composed images, into which much thought has gone. One gets a sense of the control required for many of these shots, and the endless patience, until the mental image can meld with that captured by the lens. Dan Prince even has a rare trick he has learnt to make animals look straight at him without their usual dismissiveness, and the point at which they are caught silently assessing this quiet man is not wasted; it is the perfect moment. Despite the information fed to us, some images say much more in what is absent, than present, a skill that develops from a high level of visual literacy, and instinct in what comprises a satisfying picture. Dan Prince has completely mastered that void without any degree of abstraction; the images are elegantly self possessed to the extent that one feels he may be a person completely at ease without the voices of others, and it is one of the things that makes seeing through his eyes so captivating.
