Thomas Widerberg, Northern Lights with the Taurus, 27 x 100cm, 2012

The work of photographer Thomas Widerberg (1964-) is concerned with the solitude and majesty of remote landscapes.

Throughout his career, Thomas has made repeated journeys to some of the world’s most remote areas, from the remote Svalbard archipelago in his native Norway, to Patagonia at the southern-most point of South America. His work documents a feeling of solitude and quiet contemplation while engulfed in the landscape. Shadow’s play on bare mountains, the Northern Lights dance, reflected in white snow, and the last traces of humanity vanish under the weight of dense sky. Through these landscapes, the feeling of solitude and enlightenment becomes manifest.

Although Thomas has worked primarily as a photographer for almost 40 years, he is also a trained composer and musician. His compositions have a ‘cosmic’ atmosphere mirroring the celestial feel of his imagery.

Northern Lights is Thomas’s first solo exhibition of photography in Newcastle, presenting over a decade of work. Thomas has exhibited across Norway after holding his first exhibition on Svalbard in 1996, and most recently showed work with Bermondsey Project Space, London. Previously he has composed music and directed a visual play about the Northern Lights for the Lillehammer Olympics in 1994, staged numerous shows alongside his brother, the sculptor Nicolaus Widerberg, and father, the painter Frans Widerberg, and exhibited across Germany, Italy, Malaysia and Indonesia. Thomas lives and works in Oslo.

Also on show are North Shields artist Crispian Heath’s mesmeric glass sculptures, inspired by the rugged cliffs and geological sites of Britain.

We are delighted to be joined by Thomas on the opening Preview, Thursday 21st March, 5-7:30pm. All works are available for sale.
